Chapter 1 โ€” The Introduction

Creating a Single Global IoT Platform for Heineken

Heineken operates hundreds of thousands of pubs, bars and event venues across the world โ€” each with different equipment, vendors and digital tools. To bring order, insight and control to this fragmented landscape, Heineken initiated SENS: a unified global IoT platform designed to standardize how every pub connects, communicates and delivers value.

One platform. Global scale. Endless use cases.

SENS replaces a patchwork of vendor-specific solutions with a single, cloud-native architecture that makes every connected asset โ€” from beer taps to fridges to smart displays โ€” part of one global ecosystem. The platform serves both Heineken internal teams, who rely on accurate asset data to optimize operations, and bar owners, who gain tools ranging from social media automation to perfect-pour monitoring. By consolidating technologies and workflows, Heineken unlocks massive scalability and prepares for a new era of digital hospitality.

Chapter 2 โ€” The challenge

Standardizing global operations across thousands of pubs and countless IoT vendors

Heineken needed a platform that could replace inconsistent, costly and incompatible IoT systems with one powerful foundation that every vendor, device and pub could rely on.

Fragmentation across vendors, devices and countries

Heinekenโ€™s footprint spans dozens of countries, each with different IoT suppliers and custom-built solutions. These systems were expensive to maintain, lacked interoperability and generated isolated data silos. A unified IoT layer was required to ensure consistent communication standards, shared data models and the ability to onboard new technology partners quickly without reinventing the wheel.

The need for real time global insights

Heineken had no single source of truth for asset performance across the world. Key data such as pour volumes, fridge temperatures, GPS locations, stock levels and equipment health existed in scattered systems or not at all. To drive operational excellence, Heineken needed a platform capable of collecting, processing and distributing this data in real time โ€” at global scale โ€” while maintaining accuracy and reliability.

Scalability, multi-tenancy and future readiness

The platform needed to support every Heineken market, every brand and countless future use cases. This required a multi-tenant SaaS architecture, world-class security, global provisioning flows, and the ability to support new device types and digital experiences without architectural changes. The system had to be future-proof, enabling IoT vendors to focus on hardware while SENS provided a standardized, secure and scalable digital backbone.

Chapter 3 โ€” The project

A cloud-native IoT platform built for global scale and endless integrations

Synadia engineered SENS as a fully serverless platform on AWS, connecting IoT devices across continents and standardizing how vendors integrate with Heinekenโ€™s digital ecosystem.

A standardized communication layer for all IoT vendors

We developed a unified protocol and SDK that allows vendors to connect their devices to SENS using secure certificate-based MQTT. Every device gains access to features like OTA firmware updates, configuration management, telemetry ingestion and health monitoring โ€” right out of the box. This ensures consistency, reduces onboarding time and eliminates the need for vendors to build their own cloud infrastructure.

A serverless, multi-tenant global cloud architecture

To support worldwide deployments, SENS runs on a fully serverless AWS architecture with automatic scaling, near-zero maintenance and ultra-low operational costs. Multi-tenant isolation ensures that every country and market can configure their environment independently while benefiting from the same shared platform. APIs stream data into Heinekenโ€™s analytics environment, enabling insights that power operational efficiency, brand experiences and new business models.

Edge intelligence and unified configuration management

We built customizable edge firmware and a gateway architecture capable of buffering local data, supporting future connectivity protocols and enabling deterministic control of pub hardware. From the cloud, Heineken can fully configure each pub: tap behavior, beverage mappings, access control, sensor definitions, workflows and use cases. Whether a setup has two devices or fifty, SENS provides a consistent and automated installation flow for technicians worldwide.

Chapter 4 โ€” The result

A unified global platform powering real time insights and connected pub experiences

SENS is now live across multiple markets and suppliers, enabling Heineken to deploy new IoT use cases faster and more reliably than ever before.

Real time global visibility into pub operations

Heineken now has a single location to monitor everything from beverage pours to fridge temperatures, GPS locations, image captures and device status. This data enables better decision-making, proactive service and a deeper understanding of how pubs operate around the world. What once required multiple systems now happens in one coherent view.

Standardized onboarding for vendors and global markets

IoT suppliers can now integrate with Heineken through one consistent framework โ€” drastically reducing engineering time and ensuring interoperability. New markets can activate use cases quickly, benefiting from shared infrastructure, unified data models and standardized installation flows. This accelerates time-to-market and reduces total cost of ownership.

Reliable control, OTA updates and future-ready extensibility

Heineken can remotely update devices, roll out new features, manage configurations and introduce entirely new use cases without physical intervention. For the first time, the company has a scalable foundation that supports long-term innovation โ€” from connected taps to digital promotions to AI-driven predictive maintenance. SENS is no longer just an IoT system, but a global digital backbone for Heinekenโ€™s future.
